Dabu comes from a conservative family where married women are expected to stay home and cover their faces with a 'parda' in the presence of men. In a setting where women’s roles are traditionally limited, Dabu’s journey to the spices unit is extraordinary. With the unwavering support of her mother-in-law and husband, Dabu began working in the spices unit, marking a powerful shift in her life and breaking the mould of societal expectations.
The Spices Unit: A Path to Independence
Established in 2019, the spices unit engages 20 women full-time in preparing and packaging spices. Every morning, Dabu completes her household chores before joining her team at the unit. Throughout the day, she participates in various tasks—from cleaning and sorting spices to operating machines and preparing bulk orders. This routine has not only offered her new skills but also provided her a steady source of income and an empowering sense of independence.
Financial Freedom and Personal Pride
For Dabu, the most fulfilling aspect of working at the spices unit is the independence she has gained by earning her own income. Reflecting on her journey, she shares:
“I’m independent, in a society where most women ask their husbands for money.
I buy myself whatever I want, whenever I want, and help my family when in need. This makes me feel proud!”
Building a Community of Support
The spices unit is more than just a workplace for Dabu and her fellow workers—it’s a community where they support each other, share responsibilities, and celebrate each other’s achievements. In an environment where their hard work is valued, Dabu and her colleagues have found not only financial stability but a powerful sense of solidarity.
Dabu’s story shows the impact of opportunities that empower women to step beyond limitations, gain independence, and find pride in their own achievements.
